DIY Coastal Beach Hook Rack with Weathered Wood and Transfers

I always love creating pieces that feel relaxed, simple, and a little weathered, and this coastal beach sign turned out exactly like I imagined. I started with a wooden pallet board from Michaels and transformed it into a beach-inspired hook rack using layered stains, colorful stenciling, and some adorable coastal transfers.

The goal for this piece was to create something that looked sun-faded and beachy, almost like an old sign you’d find hanging in a little seaside cottage.

I started by staining the board with Minwax Weathered Oak to give it that aged driftwood look. Once that dried, I layered buttermilk and burlap tones over the top to soften everything and make the wood feel more weathered and worn.

For the main design, I used the large “BEACH” stencil and painted each letter in a different coastal-inspired color. I loved how the soft blues and turquoise shades blended together without feeling too dark or heavy.

One little trick that helped was positioning the stencil slightly above the groove in the pallet board so the letters wouldn’t sink down into the cracks. That kept the design looking much cleaner and easier to stencil.

After the lettering was finished, I added transfers with flip flops, a surfboard, shells, a starfish, and the cutest little beach bird. I even cut some of the transfers so they would settle naturally into the grooves of the board, which made the whole piece feel more realistic and dimensional.

To finish everything off, I added cup hooks across the bottom so the sign could actually be functional. This would work perfectly for:

I also darkened the edges slightly with paint to give it more depth and a naturally weathered coastal look.

One thing I really love about this collection is that even if you aren’t a “coastal decorator,” there are still so many pieces you can use in different ways. Some of the transfers work beautifully for Father’s Day projects, kids’ rooms, lake house decor, and even faith-based signs.
