DIY Peacock Door Hanger with the Grace in Every Step Stencil
There are some projects that immediately capture your attention, and this peacock design was one of them. When I first saw the Grace in Every Step stencil from the new Everyday Home Collection, I knew I wanted to create something special with it. The graceful peacock paired with such a beautiful sentiment makes this project both meaningful and eye-catching.

For my base, I started with a 13-inch wood round and created a soft blue background using Minwax White Water-Based Stain topped with Vintage Blue stain. I didn’t want a solid painted surface. Instead, I wanted the background to have movement and variation so the metallic colors of the peacock would really stand out.
Before I began painting, I spent some time studying photographs of real peacocks. Their feathers have incredible depth and shimmer, which inspired me to use metallic paints throughout the design. I chose Ice Blue, Crystal Green, Peacock Pearl, Splendid Gold, Champagne Gold, and Oyster Pearl to recreate that beautiful iridescent look.
One of the keys to this project was working slowly. Rather than trying to cover everything with heavy coats of paint, I built the colors gradually using dome brushes and very light layers. The metallic paints blended beautifully together, allowing the feathers to have natural movement and dimension.
As the peacock began to take shape, I added darker accents and subtle shading to create depth in the body and tail feathers. Small details like the eye, beak, and feather highlights made a huge difference in bringing the design to life. By the end, the peacock shimmered beautifully in the light while still maintaining a soft, elegant look.
The words “Grace in Every Step” felt like the perfect finishing touch. It’s such a wonderful reminder that God walks with us through every season, every challenge, and every blessing along the way.
While this piece works beautifully as a door hanger, I also shared a few alternative ideas during the project. It could easily become a decorative tray, a riser with painted wooden spool feet, or even a unique wall accent. That’s one of my favorite things about crafting—one design can inspire so many different possibilities.
This peacock may take a little extra time, but the finished result is worth every minute. The layered metallic colors, graceful design, and encouraging message come together to create a piece that is both beautiful and meaningful.
