DIY Vintage Lady Liberty Patriotic Arch (With Extra Side Design)
I love decorating with patriotic pieces because they’re not just for the Fourth of July. We celebrate our country throughout the year with Flag Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Military Appreciation events, and so many other special occasions. That’s why I wanted to create a piece that could stay on display long after Independence Day has passed.

For this project, I started with a simple wooden arch from Michaels. I wanted it to have an old, weathered appearance, so I layered several colors of Sweet Pickins Milk Paint over a light brown base. Milk paint is one of my favorite finishes because it’s wonderfully unpredictable. Sometimes it chips, sometimes it crackles, and every project turns out just a little differently. That’s part of its charm.
To create the center background, I printed the hymn “America” onto rice paper and applied it with Mod Podge. Rice paper is one of my favorite materials because its natural fibers almost disappear into the project while still adding beautiful texture. It gives the finished piece the look of an old vintage document that has been part of the sign for years.
The real star of this project is the beautiful Lady Liberty transfer from Essential Stencil’s Semiquincentennial Collection. Once I positioned the transfer over the hymn page, everything came together beautifully. I finished the project with dark wax around the edges to soften the colors and give the entire piece a well-loved, antique appearance.
One of my favorite things about projects like this is that you can personalize them in so many ways. You could add a small bow, tuck in a few wooden stars, use different patriotic sheet music, or even display it on a shelf beside vintage books and baskets. It’s a simple project with endless possibilities.
