DIY Patriotic Flag Sign & Coastal Turtle Sign

Sometimes the simplest projects turn out to be the prettiest, and these two wood decor pieces were so much fun to create. I wanted to make something with a coastal summer feel along with a rustic patriotic touch, and these transfers and stencils from Essential Stencil worked perfectly together.

For the patriotic piece, I started with a round wood blank stained in Dark Walnut using Minwax water-based stain. I lightly dry brushed some gold paint over the surface to give the background a soft shimmer and distressed look before adding the beautiful American flag transfer. Even on the dark stain, the transfer still showed up beautifully and had that hand-painted appearance that I love.

After adding the flag, I painted in the flag pole using gold, navy blue, and a touch of white to blend everything together. Then I added the phrase “Blessed Is the Nation Whose God Is the Lord” in layered gold tones to help the lettering stand out against the stained wood background. The finished sign has such a warm rustic Americana feel and would look beautiful on a front door, in a camper, or displayed for patriotic holidays all summer long.

Coastal Turtle Sign

The second project was this adorable coastal turtle sign using a small wood stand from CraftDeals. I painted the background with Dixie Bell Vintage Duck Egg, which gave it the prettiest soft beachy color. Then I added a gorgeous floral sea turtle transfer and paired it with the phrase “Move at Your Own Pace.”

To make the lettering pop a little more, I layered gold paint over a marigold base coat and added small bubble details and starfish accents around the turtle. Those little finishing touches really helped bring the whole underwater theme together.

I love how both projects came together with only a few paint colors and simple techniques. These are the kinds of crafts that look detailed and impressive without being overly complicated, and they would make beautiful gifts or seasonal decor pieces.
