DIY Welcome Friends Wooden Tag Sign
Sometimes the simplest projects turn out to be some of my favorites. For this project, I wanted to create a welcoming farmhouse-style sign using the Welcome Friends stencil from the Everyday Home Collection. Instead of using the stencil on a round sign, I decided to use a decorative wooden tag to show that stencil designs can be adapted to fit all kinds of surfaces and projects.

- Dixie Bell Chalk Paint – Thicket
- Essential Stencil Stencil Brushes
- Chip Brush
- Painter’s Tape
- Sanding Sponge

I started by painting the tag with Dixie Bell’s Thicket chalk paint. I wasn’t looking for a perfectly smooth finish. I wanted a slightly rustic, vintage appearance that would complement the lace design and welcoming sentiment. A simple painted background allows the stencil details to really shine without competing for attention.
One of the things I love most about stencils is how customizable they are. Even when multiple people use the same stencil, every project turns out completely different because of color choices, finishes, embellishments, and personal style. That’s what makes crafting so much fun.
For this project, I incorporated the lace elements from the stencil design at both ends of the tag. The delicate pattern adds softness and elegance while still keeping the overall look simple and farmhouse-inspired. I used a light touch with my stencil brush, gradually building up the color to avoid bleed-through and keep the design crisp.
The “Welcome Friends” wording became the focal point of the piece. I wanted it to feel warm and inviting—something that would greet guests whether displayed on a door, wall, shelf, or porch area. The combination of the script lettering and lace accents gives the sign a timeless look that works in many decorating styles.
As I worked, I also talked about ways this design could be personalized even further. Adding a handmade flower, decorative button, ribbon, or seasonal embellishment would make each piece unique. You could easily customize it to match your home’s colors and decor style.
This quick and easy project is a great reminder that stencils aren’t limited to one type of surface. With a little creativity, you can take a design intended for a round sign and turn it into a beautiful tag, wall hanging, porch accent, or gift for a friend. Happy crafting!
