DIY Rustic Church Decor with Faith-Filled Vintage Charm
One of my favorite things to create is décor that tells a story. Sometimes it’s a memory from childhood. Sometimes it’s a favorite place. And sometimes it’s a simple reminder of faith.
This rustic church project was inspired by those little country churches you occasionally see tucked away in the mountains or along quiet country roads. The kind with weathered paint, simple architecture, and generations of stories held within their walls. As I worked on this piece, I couldn’t help but think about those tiny one-room churches and the people who faithfully gathered there week after week.

I started with a wooden church cutout and painted it in Dixie Bell Olive Wood, a beautiful muted green that immediately gave the piece an aged, vintage feel. Once the base coat was dry, I added a damask stencil pattern using Magnolia paint. I intentionally kept the stencil work slightly imperfect because I wanted the church to look weathered and loved, as if the paint had naturally faded over time.
After distressing the surface with sanding sponges and waxes, I added the doors and window details. Using darker wax around the edges helped create depth and age while keeping the overall look soft and rustic.
One of my favorite additions was the small tag featuring the verse: “Grace Upon Grace” – John 1:16
The tag hangs from a tiny skeleton key, which became one of the most meaningful elements of the project. As I worked, I kept thinking about how Jesus is the key to our hearts. Faith unlocks the door that allows us to enter into a relationship with Him. That symbolism made this little church even more special.
To finish the design, I added a bow made from cheesecloth. The soft texture reminded me of the linen cloths mentioned throughout Scripture, and it brought a gentle, vintage feel to the piece. A touch of greenery and a few buttons tied everything together beautifully.
This project reminded me that even simple pieces can carry a powerful message. The church, the key, the cross, and the scripture all work together to tell a story of faith, grace, and God’s love.
