Flamingo Summer Door Hanger DIY
I had so much fun creating this bright tropical flamingo sign. I wanted to make something colorful and summery, but I also wanted to show that you don’t always have to use large rounds for door hangers.
This project was created on a 14-inch wood round, which makes it perfect for smaller front doors, interior doors, campers, or cozy little spaces that need a pop of summer color.
I started by whitewashing the wood round with Minwax water-based stain and lightly sanding the surface once it dried. I love doing this because it softens the wood grain while still letting some of the natural texture show through.
Supplies Used
- 14-inch wood round from Hobby Lobby
- Essential Stencil flamingo stencil
- Hibiscus & Palm Leaves transfers
- DecoArt paints:
- Tiger Lily
- Tabberry
- Vintage Pink
- Black
- Minwax Water-Based White Wash stain
- Dome stencil brushes
- Rake brush
- Transfer tool
- Heat tool
For the flamingo, I layered several shades of pink and coral tones to create depth and feather texture. I used a rake brush to add soft feather details and blended the colors together for a hand-painted look.
One of my favorite parts of this project was mixing the hibiscus and palm leaf transfers with the flamingo stencil. I love combining different stencil and transfer sets to create completely new designs. It gives you so many more ways to customize your decor and stretch your supplies.
I added “Hello Summer” in black lettering to balance all the bright tropical colors and keep the design grounded. The black lettering really helped the flamingo and flowers stand out even more.
This would be such a cute piece for:
- A summer front porch
- Camper decor
- A beach house
- Poolside decorating
- Tropical summer decor
- Interior doors
I also love that this project shows you can take larger stencils and adapt them to smaller surfaces just by shifting elements around a bit. And honestly, flamingos just make people smile!
